You don't need to be a dedicated jazz fan to know the name Louis Armstrong.

He became world-famous for his hits "Hello Dolly" and "What a wonderful world" and his gravelly voice is a unique and unmistakable hallmark. This box comprises 19 original albums where he features with Ella Fitzgerald Oscar Peterson and others. But his reputation as still one of the most popular jazz musician is chiefly due to his virtuoso trumpet playing. With his "Hot Five" later extended to "Hot Seven" he succeeded in launching a world-wide career that also included roles in several films. And all that despite growing up in humble circumstances in New Orleans where he was born in 1901 and being placed in a home for needy children where he learned to play the cornet. He later became a member of King Oliver's "Creole Jazz Band". These 10 CDs offer an opportunity to hear again those many songs; a pleasure not only for jazz freaks for the musical palette ranges from blues through Dixieland to songs from musicals one or two interesting "Satchmo" LPs appearing for the first time on CD. The nickname "Satchmo" a short form of "Satchel mouth" was an allusion to his thick lips. After many tours that he undertook despite heart problems Louis Armstrong died on 6th July 1971 in New York.
