ベースのMARTIN BLUNTを中心に88年ウェスト・ミッドランズで結成、ほどなくヴォーカルTIM BURGESSの加入を得て、マンチェスター・ブームの中でSTONE ROSESやHAPPY MONDAYS、INSPIRAL CARPETSの後身としてデビュー。グルーヴに則ったインディ・ダンスなマンチェ・ブームの終焉後も、ブリット・ポップ・ブームへの適応など幾多の変遷を経て、やがてイギリスを代表するロック・バンドとして大成したオルタナティヴ・ロックスCHARLATANS。
